Green Lighting Week – Showing Yerevan in a Whole New Light

Oct 23, 2017

The UNDP-GEF "Green Urban Lighting" project*, in partnership with the RA Ministry of Nature Protection and Yerevan Municipality, organises a Yerevan Green Lighting Week on 23-27 October aimed at raising public awareness about energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly lighting solutions. The campaign is in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals #7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and #13 (Climate Action).

Today, Erik Grigoryan, First Deputy Minister of Nature Protection, Dmitry Mariyasin, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative in Armenia, and Vardan Gabrielyan, Director of the “Yerevan City Light” CJSC of Yerevan Municipality, took part in the kick-off event of the awareness campaign.

LED lights are making a big difference already in some of most important public spaces of Yerevan. Since March 2015, around 1300 LED light fixtures have been installed on the road to “Zvartnots” airport, Mashtots and Arshakunyats Avenues, and Tsitsernakaberd and Athens Streets. In addition, the Yerevan Zoo is basking in the light from 160 new LEDs. With 500 tons of reductions in greenhouse gas emissions annually, from these installations alone, the move to LED makes our environment more pleasant for everybody.

The benefits of LED lights do not stop with environmental protection. LED uses 8 times less energy than traditional light sources. The super-efficient LED technology also brings significant savings to the Yerevan Municipality energy budget. Specifically, the 5 streets already refurbished with LED lights are bringing an impressive spending reduction of $115,000 every year.

The benefits of LED can also be accessible in households by simply swapping the traditional incandescent bulbs with new LED versions that last up to 50 times longer and use 8 times less electricity.

Throughout the week, all citizens will have the opportunity to engage in a number of educational and fun activities related to energy-efficient LED technology. Specifically, throughout Green Lighting Week there will be special locations in Yerevan city, where our citizens can change their traditional light bulbs for LEDs and get a chance to win one of many nice surprises: roses, wine, coffee, chocolate or museum tickets.

The exchange booths will be functioning from Monday to Friday from 12 pm to 8 pm at the following addresses:

  • October 23, 24, 25: Northern Avenue, near the fountains, and near "Yeritasardakan" metro station,
  • October 26, 27: Garegin Nzhdeh Square, near "Ameriabank", and near the Market of Nor-Nork administrative district.
