Achim Steiner, UNDP Administrator: Statement on International Women’s Day
Mar 7, 2018
Women’s movements dominate today’s global conversation. From #MeToo and #TimesUp spotlighting sexual harassment and abuse, to #NiUnaMenos, the not one less movement protesting femicide, women voices demanding equality have crossed the globe, and a palpable feeling of change is in the air. These movements and marches infuse this year’s International Women’s Day with special meaning. Today, we celebrate the activists who work tirelessly to “speak truth to patriarchy” and push all of us to achieve equal rights for women.
Helen Clark: Statement on International Women's Day
Mar 8, 2016
This International Women’s Day, the world stands well positioned to move forward on gender equality. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by the UN General Assembly last year, asserts that gender equality is not only as a human right, but also a necessary foundation for a peaceful and inclusive world. Gender equality is the sole focus of one of the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals, and is also integrated in the other goals, reflecting the growing consensus that gender equality is not just a worthy goal in its own right, but also a driver of progress across all development goals.

According to the World Health Organization, gender-based violence kills as many women between the ages of 15 and 44 as does cancer. Its toll on women's health surpasses that of traffic accidents and malaria combined.

Oct 17, 2014
Each year on International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, we can recommit to that goal, and, in the words of the UN Secretary-General's message for this day this year, plan for a world where no-one is left behind. Since 1990, the baseline date against which Millennium Development Goal progress is measured, hundreds of millions of people have moved out of extreme poverty and attained better access to health care and education. Globally, extreme poverty has reduced by half since 1990; the goal of enrolling all children in primary schools is close to being met; child mortality has been significantly reduced, and 2.3 billion people have gained access to improved drinking water.
