Message from UNDP Administrator Helen Clark on International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

Violence against women and girls appears all too often in headlines across the world. But along with the cases that make the news are many thousands of other incidents occurring every day, on every continent, and in every country. According to the World Health Organization, gender-based violence kills as many women between the ages of 15 and 44 as does cancer. Its toll on women's health surpasses that of traffic accidents and malaria combined.

Message from Helen Clark on the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

Each year on International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, we can recommit to that goal, and, in the words of the UN Secretary-General's message for this day this year, plan for a world where no-one is left behind. Since 1990, the baseline date against which Millennium Development Goal progress is measured, hundreds of millions of people have moved out of extreme poverty and attained better access to health care and education. Globally, extreme poverty has reduced by half since 1990; the goal of enrolling all children in primary schools is close to being met; child mortality has been significantly reduced, and 2.3 billion people have gained access to improved drinking water.

2014 International Women’s Day Statement for Helen Clark

This year’s International Women’s Day theme – Equality for Women is Progress for All – states a simple truth. No country will reach its full potential if its female citizens do not enjoy full equality. As the 2015 end date of the Millennium Development Goals nears, and as discussion on the next global development agenda intensifies, there is strong momentum for achieving development with equity, including by eradicating gender inequality and empowering women and girls.

The UNDP Administrator Statement on the IDEP

World leaders meeting a few weeks ago at the UN Special Event on the Millennium Development Goals underscored their commitment “to free humanity from poverty and hunger as a matter of urgency.” In their efforts to accelerate progress to meet the MDGs by their 2015 target date and agree to an ambitious new post-2015 global development agenda, they expressed their resolve to ensure the world’s poorest and most vulnerable people remain at the fore. The theme of this year’s International Day for the Eradication of Poverty “Working together towards a World without discrimination: Building on the experience and knowledge of people in extreme poverty,” reminds us that this objective will require that all of us, as individual citizens, community activists, development actors, and decision-makers confront discrimination in all its manifestations.
