Supporting Development of Tourism Sector in Armenia

Jan 28, 2016

Yerevan, 28 January 2016 – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Armenia and the Development Foundation of Armenia (DFA) signed a document to jointly support the development of the tourism sector in Armenia and enhance the role of the tourism sector in socio-economic development of local communities in the regions.

“Cooperation with the DFA is an important factor to assure that our plans organically complement the efforts of other stakeholders, and create a synergetic effect in the tourism sector,” said Bradley Busetto, UN Resident Coordinator/UNDP Resident Representative in Armenia.

“Tourism and proportional territorial development are among RA Government priorities, and the pilot project in Bjni reflects those goals. This initiative will become a successful precedent for similar projects in other regions”, said Arman Khachaturyan, DFA Executive Director.

UNDP and DFA have successfully cooperated in developing a concept for a project on Integrated Rural Tourism Development. It focuses on creating sustainable income-generating opportunities as an additional income source to reduce the rural poverty levels, contributing to proportional territorial development of Armenia, as well as shaping a conducive environment for rural development in the country.

As a pilot initiative, UNDP has been exploring the untapped tourism potential in Bjni community, Kotayk region. It is expected that tested and successful tourism activities in the community will be replicated in other local communities of Armenia in the upcoming projects of UNDP.

Advocacy and public awareness are also a part of the partnership efforts, since UNDP and DFA plan to carry out joint activities to promote targeted rural communities as small tourist destinations through media, social networks, and various promotional events.
