The First Successful Experience of Enveloping a Multi-Apartment Building

The building in Avan administrative district

Yerevan, 19 September 2014 - The official launch of the enveloped building located in #6 Daniel Varouzhan street, Avan administrative district, took place today. The enveloping of the building has been financed by the UNDP-GEF “Improving Energy Efficiency in Buildings” project and co-financed by Yerevan Municipality. Staff of Avan administrative district and “Avan-3” condominium have their contribution during the implementation of the project.

In coordination with the RA Ministries of Nature Protection and Urban Development, UNDP’s main objective was to envelope buildings and show the energy efficiency potential of existing buildings and the economic justification of the measures.

In the framework of the Letter of Intent signed between the UNDP and Yerevan Municipality, the A1-451 KP1P/9 series panel building in Avan administrative district was selected. The selection of this type of building was conditioned upon the fact that these buildings are quite common in various cities of the country; also the high seismic resistance and the actuality of construction of such buildings in Armenia have been taken into account.

Bradley Busetto, UN Resident Coordinator/UNDP Resident Representative in Armenia, Aramayis Grigoryan, Minister of Nature Protection, took part in the official launch of the building, joined by representatives of international organizations, design and construction companies, and educational institutions.

As a result of enveloping of the building, the energy performance was improved for about 60 percent. It has been possible to ensure quite affordable heating for residents (under 100 percent thermal comfort level heating costs are around AMD 287 m2/month). Annual savings are around AMD 6 mln (according to current gas and electricity tariffs).

This is the first ever large-scale experience of enveloping of a multi-apartment building in Armenia which might have a high level of replication taking into account the necessity of energy costs reduction of residents of such buildings, as well as the priority of ensuring energy security of the country.
