Round Table Discussion on Legislation, Policy and Institutional Frameworks of Environmental Education in ArmeniaNov 23, 2016
On November 23, 2016 in the scope of UNDP-GEF “Generate global environmental benefits through environmental education and raising awareness of stakeholders” project a workshop was organized in Yerevan, Armenia. The kick-off workshop was aimed at providing a platform for discussion of draft findings on legislative, policy and institutional aspects of Environmental Education (EE) as a tool for ensuring compliance with multilateral environmental agreements. The workshop was attended by more than 50 stakeholders representing key ministries, governmental and educational institutions, international and non-governmental organizations.
Alongside with the main themes related to the legal, policy, strategic and institutional frameworks for using EE and awareness raising as tools to address natural resource management issues, the attendees also discussed the role of community based organizations in EE.
Mrs. Stephanie Hodge, Project International Consultant, shared best international practices and examples in using EE and awareness raising as tools to address natural resource management issues.
The participants reaffirmed the timeliness and significance of this project in Armenia, emphasized their readiness and interest in collaboration. The stakeholders agreed on the legislative and policy gaps associated with the field, expressing hope that the project will achieve all the objectives and targets set. The workshop participants’ feedback and recommendations will be summarized, serving as an invaluable information for project’s further activities.
UNDP-GEF “Generate global environmental benefits through environmental education and raising awareness of stakeholders” project is in the implementation stage since June 2016. The project is funded by the Global Environmental Facility (GEF) and implemented by UNDP in Armenia. The target of this three-year project is to expand the capacity of Armenia to use environmental education and awareness raising as tools to generate global and national environmental benefits and better address Rio Convention strategies.
