Supporting Ecotourism in ArmeniaNov 12, 2015
On 12 November the opening of Dsegh Nature Visitor Center took place. The center was established by the joint efforts of UNDP/GEF Small Grants Programme, the Rhone Alpes Regional Council in France, SVS BirdLife Switzerland, and the Armenian Society for the Protection of Birds.
It is located in one of the sites of the Important Bird Areas identified by BirdLife International as being habituated by one or more globally threatened bird species.
The visitor center will provide information to tourists on local wildlife, conservation challenges and serve as a base for organizing bird watching, eco-tours guiding and other nature-friendly forms of recreational activities. It also will be used as an awareness raising and education hub for local people with a special focus on the youth.
A fully functional Nature Visitor Center will increase the number of families engaged in a variety of tourism services and small businesses in the community, such as bed-and-breakfast and tour guiding (birdwatching, horse-back riding, hiking, cultural sightseeing and more).
