Donate to Save
In its day-to-day activities in Armenia the United Nations try address many issues varying from protection of the environment and fundamental human rights to support the Syrian Armenians and the most vulnerable – children of Armenia. In most cases we share our experience and international best practices, however, rare enough we directly participate in these activities and serve as an example.
Recently, there was a pledge for a blood donation from the parents of a 3-months old baby. Strangely enough only few people expressed readiness to support. While thanking everyone who were so much interested to help, Anna Sahakyan, the Head of the Blood Donor Registry at the Hematology Center in Yerevan stressed that there are many people in the country that urgently need blood transfusion.
Blood donation is a pressing problem in our country, since we have no national registry, which means that it is quite a challenge to locate a matching donor. Recently, within one of our projects the UN supported Anna Sahakyan to implement her idea of digitizing the Blood Banks Registry all over Armenia that she had developed during the Social Innovation Camp. During the joint work we realized that there is a problem of blood deficit all across Armenia and one of the reasons behind this is pure lack of philosophy of voluntary blood donation among our people. Anna Sahakyan even said that almost no one is willing to donate blood to support the ones who need it.
This led the UN in Armenia to the idea that we should serve an example by participating in a blood donation action and encouraging other to join the action. During the planning process, we received UNDP Administrator Helen Clark’s message encouraging all UN staff to join in action for #GivingTuesday and support those in need. Next was UN Resident Coordinator/UNDP Resident Representative Bradley Busetto’s call to use this day – 3 December - and come together for a meaningful support which mobilized the UN team around the action that we called “Donate to Save.”
“I am happy that our staff reacted so quickly. I am also grateful to all those who are genuinely ready to support irrespective of the fact whether they know the person in need or not, and whether this is an adult or a child,” said Bradley Busetto.
